If you want to get creative with your home renovation, flooring and backsplash tile is a great place to start. Whether it’s taking up a lot of surface area as a backsplash or flooring, or merely an accent, framing a walkway or fireplace, choosing the right tile is SO important. Tile has the potential to make or break a design. Read on for our complete guide to choosing stylish tiles for your home makeover:
Wood Plank Porcelain Tile Floors
Wood plank porcelain is all the rage! It’s perfect for creating a warm, cozy, organic feeling whether installed on the walls or floors and comes in beautiful color selections. It’s a great way to get the look of hardwood, but with the endurance of tile. It works throughout the home, and is especially great in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry and mud rooms, and outdoor patios because it’s durable, easy to maintain and resistant to moisture. It’ll keep your home cooler in warmer climates, and it’s easy to add radiant heat below the tile in cooler climates.
Cement Tile Backsplashes and Accent Walls
Cement is so dramatic and fun! It’s durable and long-lasting. We love using cement tile on a focal wall to make a bold, colorful statement. Cement is also environmentally-friendly (something that’s always on our mind), and won’t break the bank! It’s truly one of the best bang-for-your-buck tiles you can get with its limitless customizable color options and pattern combinations.
Three-Dimensional Tile Backsplashes
Can we touch your walls? –You might hear your house guests say! Geometric, 3D tile is having a moment and we love it! Let the texture do the talking with these soft ceramic tiles. 3D tiles can be chic or funky and really illustrates creativity. 3D Tiles catch the light for additional visual interest and can work in any aesthetic.
Antique Mirror Tile for Added Glam
You probably already know the many benefits of using mirrors in a room: mirrors reflect light, make the room feel bigger, accentuate a space, reflect a stunning view, and function as an art statement all on its own. Now extend all of those benefits to having them build into your space for extra glamour! Antique mirror is metallic, sexy, and elegant. Finished in silver, gold, or bronze, antique mirror is adds a little romance to any space, especially in a dining room or around a fireplace or on a ceiling to make a space feel larger. If you want to include antique mirror in your kitchen backsplash, op’t for a smaller format tile so it won’t get damaged by accidental banging of pots and pans.
Subway Tile Everyone’s Favorite Classic
Reminiscent of early 1900s New York, classic rectangular subway tile never goes out of style! Subway tile is such fun to work with because of its versatility when it comes to installation:
To achieve that classic look, you’ll want a staggered installation, and to match the grout color to the tile to keep it clean and classy. But you can also play with the installation design in a non-traditional way, like herringbone. The possibilities are endless: subway tile is like a game of tetris! For a more modern approach to subway tile, you’ll want a stacked installation, with contrasting grout for a bold contemporary look. Another way to give subway tile a modern makeover is to choose tile in bold colors or play with size – go super small or extra large scale. Ceramic subway tile is an affordable tile selection, whereas using stone or glass will increase your budget.
Textured tiles are similar to the 3-dimensional tiles we talked about earlier but with a raw edge, called split face and they deserve their own category! They have a natural texture and color, are timeless, and are always unique. Textured tiles generate a warm, organic feeling and contrary to popular belief; they’re not just for the exterior of your home. In fact, they’re particularly excellent in helping achieve that sought-after California-Cool indoor-outdoor aesthetic. In one project, we used a deep grey lava rock stone on a bathroom wall that continued from the vanity wall into the shower. In another project, we used a split face stone on a bedroom wall to accentuate the texture with lighting. In a bathroom, we’d recommend pebble rocks on the wall or flat rocks on the bathroom floor (something that’s more flat and easy on bare feet). See more textured tile here.
