When The Spruce included us in their Top 16 Man Caves That Aren’t Just for Men, it sent us down a rabbit hole of some of our firm’s favorite interior design modern man cave moments. Join us as we revisit spaces in the home made just to lounge, relax with a drink or play a game of pool, showing you 10 Ideas of How to Make a Room More Than a Man Cave.
WHAT IS A MAN CAVE?
Years ago, the idea of a man cave was primarily where a man can hang out and do manly-man things, in a dingy basement surrounded by dark and dated furniture. Boy, have things changed! Today, these rooms are proudly out in the open, and are more modern, nuanced and sexy – and not just a place for the guys.
WHAT GOES IN A MAN CAVE?
The idea of this space is really just a comfortable place to get away from it all – a place relax, hang out and have a good time, whether you’re solo or with friends. We see it as warm and rich in texture, often including a blend of mixed materials that feels like a laid back expression of yourself and your interests.
Here are 10 Tips to make your space More Than a Man Cave:
1. MAKE A SMOOTH TRANSITION
Set up visual clues as you get closer to the room. Introduce the style elements and materials in places like a accessories, seating or art.
2. INCLUDE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO
This is your place to play and leave your worries at the door. Go to items include a TV, maybe a pool table, darts, card table or an incredible music set up.
Be mellow, or play it loud, crank the music and let it go.
3. COMFORTABLE SEATING
Comfortable seating is key in any man cave lounge.
Designer Tip: Most people prefer to have their own chair than to share a seat on a sofa.
4. A BAR
Nothing says Man Cave more than a custom bar ready to serve up a specialty cocktail or your favorite draft beer.
5. A ROOM WITH A VIEW
A man cave doesn’t need to be dark and moody. Bring it out into the light and give yourself a fresh perspective.
6. A QUIET NOOK
Even if there isn’t a designated room to relax away from it all, look around for other opportunities. In this project, we turned a hall closet into a reading nook.
7. SOMETHING PERSONAL & MEANINGFUL TO YOU
What makes you feel the most YOU? Is it a favorite photograph from your travels or a special piece of furniture, like this classic Josef Hoffmann Cabaret Fledermaus chair.
8. POOL TABLE
It’s becoming more popular to convert an unused room in the house into a game room. Add a pool table in your room, or bring it out to the formal living room. Whatever you do, select a table that matches with your home interior design style.
10. WINE STORAGE
A wine room with ample storage is a classy way to elevate any lounge area in your home.
We love having a blend of masculine and feminine in all of our projects, and creating a casual space like these examples are so much fun.
Are you thinking of designating your own space for something that feels more authentically you? We hope you picked up a few ideas of what you can incorporate into your room!
